Olympium Synchro Swim Club athletes wrapped up the 2007 Provincial Synchronized Swimming Championships glittering in gold, leading a procession of swimmers to the podium to receive many of the trophies, medals and ribbons that were awarded during the 3-day event that declared Ontario 's top synchronized swimmers.
In all, over 170 athletes from across the province gathered at the Olympium Sports Complex in Etobicoke to vie for Provincial Titles in Tier 6 & 7 Figures, Solo, Duet and Team competitions but by Sunday afternoon, OSSC athletes had struck gold to finish the weekend with a solid lock on first place finishes!
OSSC won Gold in the hotly contested Tier 7 Junior team event, as well as the Junior/Senior Combo competition. It was a one-two OSSC punch with Jennifer Knobbs winning, and Samantha Mawhinney a close second, in Figures and Junior Solo events. Jennifer Knobbs was also crowned the Tier 7 Junior All Round Swimmer.
In the Tier 7 duet event, silver medals were awarded to Alyssa Bezeau and Stephanie Saunders, with Candace Caskey and Natasha Kokolakis earning bronze.
It was solid gold for OSSC's younger athletes in the Tier 6 competition, as OSSC dominated every event for 15 & Under athletes. OSSC swimmers impressed judges to take top honours in the 15 & Under Team competition. OSSC swimmers won not only the gold, but also the silver medal in the team event, illustrating the depth of the future talent in the club.
After winning gold and silver in Figures and Solo events, Rachel Kowalski and Rebecca Maule teamed up to win gold in the Duet event. OSSC swept every podium placing for the Duet event with Natalie Mintz and Elizabeth Todd earning silver, and Sarah Graham and Lara Tutton awarded the bronze. At the end of the meet, Rachel Kowalski placed first in the Tier 6 Individual Aggregate ranking, and was also named the Tier 6 All Round Swimmer.
To complement the spectacular performances in the pool, a remarkable line-up of synchronized swimming celebrities were on hand to present awards, including former National Team Members Nicole Cargill and Amy Caskey.
Commonwealth Games favourites Lisa and Nina Daniels of New Zealand , as well as Jenna Randall and Olivia Alison from Great Britain , were also on hand to deliver inspiring performances in the Tier 7 Senior Duet and Solo events.
Coming off a great meet, OSSC will carry the momentum as they prepare for the 2007 Eastern/Atlantic Divisional Challenge next month at the Olympium. Divisionals, which is scheduled for March 28 – April 1, is a qualifier meet for both the 2007 Canadian Open Championships (Tier 7) May 3 - 6 in Victoria and the 2007 Canadian Espoir Championships (Tier 6) May 23 - 27 in Saint John . |
